Twitter trolls
The wife of ex-England footballer Phil Neville has hit out at Twitter trolls who have bombarded the family with abuse about their disabled daughter.

Julie Neville spoke out after Greater Manchester Police (GMP) revealed complaints about online abuse had almost doubled.

Mrs Neville said one Twitter user wrote about T-shirts with the slogan "Phil Neville's daughter is a spastic".

Others had threatened to rape her while her husband had received death threats.

Mrs Neville said the abuse directed at herself and her TV pundit husband, who played for Manchester United and Everton, was "an ongoing thing".

The abuse has included barbs directed at the couple's 11-year-old daughter, who has cerebral palsy.

She said: "I think the worst things are, Phil has received death threats through Twitter and I've had people threaten to rape me.

"We had one incident where two guys put on Twitter that you can buy T-shirts and the actual writing on the T-shirts was: 'Phil Neville's daughter is a spastic, she's a Cyclops and she has eight toes'.

There is banter and their is corwardly anonymous abuse. Are these trolls kids or do you think there are gown-ups who actually behave in this way?

What has the world come to? Nothing's been the same since Elvis died.

Re: Twitter trolls
Someone on here once called my son a 'retard runt'. I thought it was funny, but then he is a healthy, bright kid, so I suppose I could afford to find it funny.

Everybody gets abuse online. Not saying it's ok, just that it's a fact of life.

My advice to anybody of a sensitive disposition is to stay offline.

True Nursey... WHO is a strange surreal world that is so far removed from reality it does not really matter... as if there really are people in the real world like the loons on here... I mean??

Actually, all things considered, we're actually quite polite an reserved with our epithets on here.

Re: Twitter trolls
Should you honestly have to stay away from media outlets if you're in the limelight as a celebrity and don't want your disabled daughter abused??? Those people who do this are cowardly scum, if some stranger said that to a child of mine in the street I'd quite rightly knock there fucking block off.

Why would anybody in their right mind want to bully an 11 year old girl because she has cerebral palsy.?

However trolling on WHO is allowed of course. Different rules apply here.

Re: Twitter trolls
The line is so blurred these days because everyone wants to get up in arms about anything they don't agree with and this redundant idiotic term "trolls" is thrown around exclusively.

There was some sick stuff about Rio's wife dieing but while one person went too far and made it racial another put "I'm glad she died"

While it's in disgusting taste it's not punishable by police action yet fans were calling for the person to be jailed.

The difference between breaking the law and being a sick objectionable human being is so murky these days...

Re: Twitter trolls
To say don't use Twitter if you don't want to be trolled is tantamount to somewhat condoning the abusers imho.

Whilst the adult banter is accepted on here it's not the fact that it is acceptable generally.

Re: Twitter trolls
No-one is saying it isn't very unfortunate and cowardly behavior on the part of the trolls.

Do you have a solution to online trolling of celebrities and their families? Or even for non-celebrities? Be interested to hear it.

Otherwise you sound like every other self-righteous Outraged of Tunbridge Wells out there.

At least I offered a suggestion, imperfect as it is.

Can we stop using the word trolls.

Re: Twitter trolls
I have another (imperfect) solution. The real (not usernames) names of some of the people who act like Billy Big Bollocks and hurl abuse at kids with cerebal palsy should be posted online with their real photo and people can hurl abuse at them

Not a perfect answer I know, but the cyber equivalent of being put in the stocks and having rotten tomatoes thrown at them.

The ones that threaten to kill and rape people need not appear as they can still be dealt with by law.

Great idea!

Call the site www.shamedinthestocks or something...

If you're a celebrity and don't want online abuse stay offline.

If you're a young female and don't want to get fondled don't ask me for directions.

These people only have themselves to blame.
